Kieran Maxwell, R.N.  Psychotherapist

About Me

Greetings! I’m so happy you have taken this step in your journey.

I’m a dedicated Registered Nurse Psychotherapist, bringing over a decade of valuable experience in clinical and community mental health to the table. My passion lies in supporting individuals through challenging times, fostering empowerment, and promoting mental health resiliency.

With a background deeply rooted in person-centred, trauma-informed, relational mental health nursing, I’ve had the privilege of working with diverse groups, including youth, adults, parents, and families grappling with overwhelm and unmanageable emotions. As we explore and collaborate together we can co-create the space to uncover ways to cultivate a sense of well-being.

Therapeutic Approach:
While I may tap into various modalities, I primarily use an embodied, relational Gestalt approach through an anti-racism and anti-oppression lens. In our sessions, I will show up with vulnerability and commit to being emotionally present, offering empathy and compassion throughout our journey together.

What You Might Expect:
Our therapeutic journey is a collaborative one. I will be a partner in your pursuit of mental and emotional well-being as we explore alternatives, navigate challenges, and embrace both tears and laugher! I’m here to guide you, ensuring you feel heard, supported, and empowered to thrive. Let’s embark on this transformative journey together—because healing is a shared experience.

Although I work with various modalities, I primarily practice relational Gestalt Therapy.

Gestalt Therapy – Gestalt therapy is a type of relational psychotherapy that often focuses on the individual in the present moment and may aid in various mental health concerns. When we move beyond the past, we may be able to find peace in the present and enrich our interactions in the world around us. As an R.N. Psychotherapist I will help you become more aware of your feelings, needs and ways of relating – in part by noticing how current situations tap into past experiences. I can also help you explore internal conflict at the root of any recurrent concerns. Through its unique approach, Gestalt therapy increasingly equips you to sit with your vulnerability and move beyond your circumstances. Your therapy might expand your self-confidence and lead to a greater sense of depth, meaning and fulfilment in your relationships and other important areas of your life.

I also have experience in and may draw upon these various modalities:

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) SFBT places focus on a person’s present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences. In this goal-oriented therapy, the symptoms or issues bringing a person to therapy are typically not targeted. Instead, a qualified therapist encourages those in treatment to develop a vision of the future and offers support as they determine the skills, resources, and abilities needed to achieve that vision successfully.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)  – ACT teaches mindfulness skills to help you live and behave in ways consistent with personal values while developing psychological flexibility. Therapists help clients recognize ways in which their attempts to suppress, manage, and control emotional experiences create challenges. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, individuals can become better able to make room for values-based actions that support well-being.

Narrative Therapy – Narrative therapy is a method of therapy that separates a person from their problem. It encourages people to rely on their own skills to minimize problems that exist in their lives. Throughout life, personal experiences become personal stories. People give these stories meaning, and the stories help shape a person’s identity. Narrative therapy uses the power of these stories to help people discover their life purpose. This is often done by assigning that person the role of “narrator” in their own story.

Therapy, regardless of the modality or techniques used, provides an opportunity to express big feelings, talk through challenges, explore patterns of behaviour, develop greater self-awareness, and offers a space and place to try different ways of being and relating.  I hope to listen to you deeply – ensuring I understand your concerns, be emotionally present to you, and if you wish, collaborate with you to explore alternatives.
